Why does the media cover more stories about overweight people in North America, as compared to starving children in third world countries? Isn't that sad?

You make a valid point. Although American obesity is a serious problem, starving children anywhere in the world is a much more serious problem. It's sad. What do we do about it? What are you doing about it? I'll tell you what my husband and I are doing. We support 2 African children through Plan USA. We also support our local food pantry.

The media covers both, haven't you seen the commercials for sponsering a child in africa for just 80 cents a day. I know they do cover about overweight people also but I just recently heard on the news that just over 1/4 or 26% of kids under 18 in Canada are overweight.

Why are kids in North America overweight?
Because of fastfood restaurants and prepackaged foods that are unhealthy for you. Who knows, maybe they don't exercise either.

But as I heard years and years ago that disgusts me is...that 20% of the world owns 80% of the worlds resources, and 80% of the world owns 20%. So there is alot of starving people out there.

I think they are covering it because it is such a bazaar and new epidemic. I mean we all understand the concept of people starving and dying because of lack of food but the idea that not only are people killing themselves by over eating but are killing their children is just frightening. Not to mention that this is the first time in history this has been such an issue. I don't think it is so sad that they are reporting it but I do think it is terribly sad that while there are children out there who are starving in North America and Third World countries that these people are so selfsefish and selfindulgent that they would gluten themselves AND THEIR CHILDREN to the point to death. I think it is important to cover both issues and maybe it would be could to see someone cover them in that perspective.

Yes it is sad. And what about the children starving right here in North America? It doesn't always have to be a "poorer" country, we should help the people here who don't have enough to eat.

It is called an agenda, and the television set is nothing more than an instrument that is used in reeducating the public.

Sit-coms, sports, religious programming, "reality" shows, pop music - - all of it is the concentrated effort to reprogram the masses into thinking on the same cognitive levels. Because when everyone is singing from the same page, the masses are easier to program than programming every individual being.

Of course it's sad.

But
A) It's easier to focus on what's wrong with "us"
B) A lot of starving people aren't in countries where there's oil.

Awful to say, but true.

Yes, it is sad, but maybe they cover the overweight people because its easier to eat less then to get food when there is none.

the starving people don't sell stories, people would tend to turn off their TVs if that was on often.....we don't like seeing what is going on in the 3rd world cause it makes us feel guilty

Maybe they want all the food overweight people eat (to send to the 3rd world countries!).
