i have found two very effective ways to control this.

1. take those over the counter zantac and prilosec pills. the generic pills work just fine.

2. watch what you eat. don't drink alcohol in excess and eat small portions of food.

Giving up the "triggers, " the things that aggravate acid reflux, and/or taking meds are the best ways to control the condition. There are some very serious, potentially deadly conditions that ignoring acid reflux might cause, so you really should get it checked out and treated. A particular kind of cancer of the esophogus is one of them. Go to the store and pick an over -the-counter brand of med to try, and try it. Side effects of proton pump inhibitors[the group of meds that Nexium and Prilosec belong to]are mild, they might include a cough, or tummy upset. If you have insurance, a prescription for that med might be cheaper. And take it. Other things to try until you can get to the doctor are hiding the foods that bother you in other foods. Eat something bland with the alcohol, it might pad your stomach enough that you won"t reflux. Also note the time of day you feel the burning, sleep on a few pillows if you wake up with burning. If you fell it on an empty stomach during the day, put in some food. Acid reflux can have physical causes, like a hiatal hernia, that might need fixing. Save up your money and go to a doctor. NIH.gov is a good website to look up medical things.

If it's during the night, then add an extra pillow. That should fix the symptom. If you can eliminate the symptom there is a good chance your body will heal itself.
Acid reflux is, usually caused by an improper diet or stress or both. Excess stomach acid iritates the valve at the top of the stomach causing it to fail when you lay horizonal. Putting an extra pillow under your head prevents the acid from reaching the valve, thereby allowing the valve to repair itself(unless it's too badly damaged) A side benefit: if you snore the extra pillow should reduce the snoring.
Another hint: don't eat things that cause your system to produce acid for 3 hours before bedtime(can't tell you what because different systems are different, but some suggestions: sweets, greasey foods, foods that naturally cause the stomach to make stomach acid AND THE BIGGIE, antiacid tablets. Antiacid tablets attempt to remove stomach acid, then when they're gone the stomach(because you've trained it by taking antiacids) tries to get ahead of the game by making more stomach acid in prepareation for the next round of antiacid tablets. To combat stomach acid(until you get yoursystem straightened out) is to use regular crackers. The baking soda in the crackers act as an acid neutralizer. Baking Soda is 13+ on the ph scale where acid is less than 1. Baking Soda is a BB gun where the antiacid tablet is a BIG rifle. The crackers don't tend to trigger the stomach to produce acid. Bear in mind this did not occur overnight and you ain't gonna fix it overnight. Think of it as driving. You ran off the road, if you ease back on the road it's all good, if you jerk the wheel it ain't pretty. The pillow, hopefully, will allow your body to heal while you're addressing all those bad habits you've acquired. Or if it's stress, learn to live with the problem, or make a change. Sorta like a horse standing on your foot, either you learn to embrace the pain, or you or the horse has to move. I know, I know, sometimes easier said than done. If it's a boss, then imagine them in reallllly rediculus situations or clothing(or lack thereof). It takes your mind off the stress causing thing, and it'll drive the boss crazy trying to figure out why you're smiling while they're inserting the shaft. Be creative-either way-stress or food. good luck

Have you checked with your family doctor about this?

You may want to look at your diet. What are you eating or drinking?
Cut out caffeine
Cut out any soda you may be drinking, the carbonation and sugar adds to reflux.
Watch the spicy foods- hot sauce, greasy/fat foods
Acidic foods also contribute to stomach reflux. (tomatoes, tomato sauce- pizza sauce)
Don't eat 3 hours before you go to bed. If you can, elevate your head with a few pillows.

I added a link to a Acid Reflux site.

Check with your doctor. There are medications that help, too.

Oh.. I had that horrible problem and it can be dangerous.. Acid reflux, as you well know is a condition in which stomach acid builds and backs up into the esophagus. The condition may trigger a number of various symptoms and varies in severity from one person to the next and for me.. it was bad.

To cure mine (I have not had it for years) I used that purple pill for two days ONLY and then from then on.. I stayed away from acidic foods past 6 pm.. that is... after 6, I never ate or drank peach or peach juice, tomato juice, strawberries, anything lemony or anything that had acid.

I do not know...from what you said above how severe your problem is/was but if it was not severe, you can follow the dietary things I mentioned above but if it is really severe, then you should see your doctor and then.. AND THEN follow the dietary points I mentioned above.

An old homeopathic remedy is to take a shot of apple cider vinegar in the morning. Believe it or not, it will end your acid reflux problem.
