at 4 am today i heard a gunshot that was very close, i go outside and theres a black guy in the street about 75 yards away. he had a shotgun, he was screaming, where are you bitc.h. you know i'll find you. well that sort of thing happens in dallas county, tx. and i used to call the cops about it, but they can never find the guy so nothing is done. so i blew it off, well 2 hours later i hear a the news, theres a stand off on my block 2 houses down, the guy had a woman and a kid hostage in his house. i should have called them, but they got him , took him to jail, and the hostages are ok. but i feel so guilty about not calling, i know this isnt a Q. i just had to let it out, forgive me people. this all happened in duncanville texas. would you have called the cops, when your so used to hearing gunshots?

Unfortantely I don't know how terrible you feeling because things like this never happen where I live. But I wouldn't put it all on myself for what happened with the stand off. You called the police previous times and they never came. It wasn't until something serious happened that they decided to get involved. If anyone is to blame it is them. Besides what about your neighbors? Did they feel it wasn't their place to call the other times? No one can be held accountable for other peoples' actions.

Yes. I would have called the cops.
Some people don't think it's necessary to call the police when stuff like that happens so frequently. My incredibly ignorant cousin, for example, thinks it makes you a snitch. Let me tell you a story.
Last year, my cousin and I saw a drive-by shooting on a street with little children playing outside. I called the police. She sulked for days and told me I shouldn't have. However, I don't feel bad in the slightest. Why? Because I have a little boy, and I don't want to live in an environment that enables criminals to endanger the life of my child.
Call the police next time. And thank God that no one was killed this time... someone very easily could have been.

yeah I know how you feel duncanville is not the safety place. My bestfriend is from there. I think if you didn't call someone else did. The problem about the police there is that they never respond. I would not beat yourself to much. Just fix your mistake and go foward with life. This is what I do when I make mistakes and if you look back you will always be miserable.

I understand what you are feeling. It is so hard when the cops don't find the person. If you keep calling they just ignore you any way. It is not your fault and you could have been put in harms way. It was the guys own fault. Everything turned out OK. If everyone who heard it had called then the outcome would have still been the same.

There's a theory that people tend to think that if other people witness a crime, that they are less obligated to take action in reporting it. I forget the name of the theory, but it's based on a killing that happened in broad daylight in NYC years ago, where over 30 people saw what happened and did nothing to stop it. Basically, the responsibility gets divvied up in a person's mind and they feel less responsible.
I'd say that maybe because you are used to hearing this kind of thing, your natural reaction was to do ignore it, or maybe your subconscious thought that someone else would do something.
It's kind of mean, but that's life, it happens. If you had gotten involved, maybe it wouldn't have gone down the way it did. Maybe it would have been better, maybe worse. Don't get down on yourself.

We cannot afford to take for granted that the police won't be able to find the perpetrator. Though I think we've all been in situations where we feel the way you did, that it won't do any good. It sounds like you learned a valuable lesson. Thank God no one got hurt and they have him in custody. Maybe you can do something nice for the woman and her child. I'm sure they need all the TLC they can get after an ordeal like that. God bless!

Well don't beat yourself up over it. Hopefully you have learned and if a situation ever arises again, you will call. Another poster mentioned the infamous crime where nobody called. I remember it and have posted a link. Give it a read. I guarantee you will call next time.
