New York was originally called New Amsterdam after the Dutch settled in North America. After the Dutch-English war, the Dutch handed over all of its colonies to England. New Amsterdam was renamed New York in honour of York in Northern England.

once upon a time in a land far far away, there was this guy everyone called York. and they named the town after him. somewhere around about where Albany is located. he was a cool guy and all, but he was in good with King Edward at the time so thats how he got the town named after him. Later on it was changed to Yorktown and another was named New York which was the busiest and biggest so they named the entire state New York.

The europeans came over from europ and called it New Amsterdam. (since the capitall of the Netherlands is called Amsterdam) Then the English bought New Amsterdam and gave it a different nam: New york. Since de original York town is in England. Hope this helpes!
