They all do. I would take an auto maintenance class. Or bring a mechanic or car savvy friend with you so you won't buy all these options at dealerships or get ripped off at mechanic garages.

Dude, they are scamming you! And that sucks!
Dealer ships are out to make money, and that's it.!
If you can find a local mechanic, ask around, go to him even if you don't have a problem. ( I like to see people even when they don't have a car problem.)
I pride myself on my reputation, its really I have, there are lots of mechanics, and you need to find one that likes working on cars. Talk with him or her, and see if you can get to know them. That's the best way.
Dealerships, are what they are you know it and I know it, and everyone here knows it.
and its a shame!
Take your car and get to know your mechanic.
Good luck Dave

Car dealerships thrive on "poor, helpless, women"... It is
best to have a male friend who knows auto mechanics to
check it out before you take it in, or, at least have him with you when you do take it in, so, there will be less
"red tape" to go through. good luck!

do a little research on the area of your car that needs work and make a list of all of the parts and have a shop look at that area of the car

You can't. Unless you are a mechanic, you are at their mercy. The only way you know you are getting a fair shake is to go to someone whose reputation you know to be honest. This is a rare comodity in today's world.

Thats the nature of the business that they do. Sad, but true. Try to find a reliable garage, or, as someone else suggested, take it directly to the place you bought it, if they have a garage there.

If you're talking about repairs, good luck. You need to go to someone you know and trust or ask a friend for a referral. If you're talking about purchasing a vehicle, go to www.kbb.com and get a comparison price.

Sad to say...but take a guy with you. Or you can get an opinion from your friends before you go so you will know what you are talking about.
Buyer beware...educate yourself.

It would be a better question to ask "How do I know if they aren't scamming me!" ALL dealerships scam. Period.
