There are a lot of conflicting and in fact incorrect answers for you to sift through. Here are some definitives:
1. You can only be off side in the opponents half of the field.

2. When the ball is played forward by one of YOUR team you must have at least two opponents between you and the goal. This INCLUDES the goalkeeper.
3. You must be interfering with play. This is a decision by the referee, not you.
4. You cannot be off side from a corner kick.
5. It is the moment when the ball is kicked that is relevant. You can run from an on side position into open space after the ball is kicked.
6. If an opponent touches the ball or passes the ball back he is in fact playing you on side.

Hope this helps.............

You can not proceed more foward then the last defensive player on the other team. Once the ball is kicked then you can move past that defender. You have to keep your eye on the last defender and when the ball is hit. This will keep you onside. Some teams play a off side trap. Just before the ball is kicked all of the defenders will run foward to pull you off sides.

Make sure there is always a player of the other team between you and the goal keeper before your teammate kicks a pass at you.

After the ball is shot you can run forward pass the defender and face the the keeper alone.

Watch some matches on TV and pay attention to that imaginary line when they call offside.

With offsides, from the midfield line to the other teams goal, there has to be atleast one guy closer to the opponents end line than you when the ball is PLAYED TO YOU.... As soon as the ball leaves someone's foot in your direction, TAKE OFF. ALWAYS take off after the ball when it's been kicked either to you, or past you (to someone else or whatever), because at that point, whether you were offsides or not, it isn't going to matter. Don't feel down because you're getting offsides too much though, be aggressive! Try to time your runs to where the second someone kicks the ball to pass it to you, you are dead even with someone on the other side of the field..... that way, you are in a dead sprint, and the guy who is on the other side is standing flat footed.... you'll have an open chance at a goal. You may have offsides called on you a few times if you don't time it right, but it only has to work once for you to get a goal. And bear in mind that offsides is only from the midfield line back...so if their last non-goalie defender is on your side of the field, stand at midfield and yell for someone to send the ball.... as soon as the ball leaves their foot, haul some butt and go get it.... I hope this helps!

And one more thing....this PLAGUED the team I played on- but NEVER give up on a ball.... if the other team gets it, hustle and try to steal the ball before they clear it... I know you might get hit with the ball because they clear it into you, but a lot of times the defender isn't expecting someone to challenge him for the ball after he steals it... and the thing is, if he was their best ball handler, he'd likely be playing midfield...so if you see someone on the other team with the ball, sprint straight at them... if they fumble around with the ball, throw a hard slide into the ball...if you go after the ball and get ball first, it won't be a foul.... and when you knock it loose, get up on your feet quick, and you may have an open chance on the goal. Also.... even if someone on your team is taking off down the field with no one there but the goalie to defend him... take off towards the goal- crash on it.... I got the first goal I ever scored in soccer because I was crashing the goal after Joe had the defense beat..... he dribbled the ball a little too far in front of him, and the goalie started to dive to cover it, and Joe slid in and knocked the ball away from the goalie, and the ball rolled into the middle of the box right in front of the goal, and I was the ONLY person there.... basically, STAY AGGRESSIVE. You have a defense behind you that will make plays if you are "too aggressive"

If your level with the last defender when the ball is played to you, your onside. If you are beyond the last defender and deemed to be interfering with play, your offside. If your not level and not interfering your OK. I think thats close enough, my advice is keep an eye on the last line of defenders. Don`t go too soon.

When in the offensive zone you have to have at least one defender between you and the goal prior to the ball being passed to you. You can't be called offside if you are on your side of center. Also you can't be offside on a throw in. I hope that helps!!

You can't get ahead of the defenders before the ball is passed to you.

if your ahead of a defender, you're offsides. when the ball is being passed to you, make sure you are BEHIND (not directly behind, but you now what i mean) the defender or you'll be called offsides
