I loaned my bedroom TV to a friend. He only had one TV and it broke. I stressed I was loaning it to him til he got his fix. Well 7 years later, no TV. As a matter of fact, he even bought himself a new TV and kept mine. I find friends love to keep your DVD movies you loan them and loan them out to other. You didn't you bought those as gifts, did you? There must be time limit, then they consider items gifts. Maybe after 1 year that a TV is a gift. Maybe after having your movie 2 weeks, it becomes a gift to them. No my favorite is when they loan your item to someone else and when you finally get it back, it is broken, but it isn't their fault, it was the person (who you don't know) who borrowed it from them.

I got so sick of it, I make them sign a 'Borrow" sheet that shows what they borrowed and when it would be due back, along with the value of the borrowed item. I don't get asked very much anymore, and that suits me just fine.

I've experienced this phenomenon myself years ago and made a rule:
1. Before you loan anything (money included), consider that it might become a gift.
2. For this reason, don't even consider loaning an item if you aren't ready to gift it.
3. I prefer to kiss an item goodbye and pass it on to a good person who can do as they wish with it.
As Monie D, above, said, when you ask for the return, sometimes it creates bad feelings. They've either lost it, damaged it, passed it on, (if it was a loan of money) don't have the money to return it because never really intended to return it and then the bad feelings start.

Yep... that's a dilemma and you should do the "borrow sheet" thing. Bump that! maybe then they won't ask you for anything anymore. I find it rude that folk would be so unconcerned about other peoples personal property that "THEY" asked to borrow. So in the future if you're not willing to go through the hassle of asking for it back. Definitely let them know that you hate asking when something will be returned so I need you so sign a "borrow sheet". If they get annoyed or angry and say something like "your kidding right?" just say not at all.. I've had bad experiences in the past. If they then say "no, I'm not going to sign"...just respond by saying, "well, I'm sorry you feel that way, but then you'll need to be ok with the fact that I just can't let you borrow my stuff"
Trust!!!.. they'll live and be alright.... if not... Oh well!

Yes that bugs me too. I love to help out people only to find they don't appreciate it. DVD's are rather expensive for people to just give to someone else and not make certain that they return them to you in a timely manner. I have lost so much over the years and now my saying is I don't loan anything sorry.

I don't loan expensive things, TVs and such, and as for DVDs, after a week, I start asking for them back. And once I get them, I don't loan others out to that person.
If they tell me they've loaned it out to some else, I tell them that they had no right to do that, that it wasn't theirs to loan. And should it be returned to me broken I inform them that they have to pay me for it, since I loaned it to them and not to the person they loaned it to. Loaning it to the 3rd person means the 2nd person is taking responsibility for it.

Everytime someone wants to borrow a movie, i tell them to give me a blank disc were i can make a copy. Yes! In the past, people borrow things and never return it, sometimes i would forget too.

I would make my mind known to this so called friend. Borrowing is just that, borrowing. This guy shows a total lack of responsibility and obligation for other people's belongings, and has a very low value of what frienship means.

I know the feeling, and when they do actually have the time to give it back, i would tell them that i dont want it no more cause it really aint no use to me now since you had it with you like you bought it or something.
