I just saw a quote from the Boston Globe dated 4/30/2006.

"President Bush has quietly claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws"

Just how many laws do we have?

Counting state and federal, tens of thousands.

But that's not a valid comparison, because Bush doesn't sign into effect any state laws, and didn't sign any of the thousands of federal laws that went into effect before he was elected.

The objection to Bush's signing statements is that the vast majority of them say that he does not intend to enforce the law because he personally disagrees with it. Yet, he swore an oath to see that the laws are faithfully executed. Which means that he's simply refusing to do his job.

If he doesn't think a bill should be enforced as law, he has the option of veto. That's the only option that the Constitution affords him as executive. But if a bill is signed into law, his job and his oath of office requires him to enforce that law. He can't just refuse to do his constitution duty because he doesn't feel like it.

There are laws in the united state that cover about every aspect of life, I would think hundreds of thousands. Some state don't have “sunset laws” so once a law is passed it is there forever, even after it doesn't make sense to have. After a couple hundred years it gets out of hand!

I think all laws should expire in 7 years, keep our “law makers” busy trying to figure out which laws to keep instead of always trying to come up with new onces!

Depends where you are. Some laws apply to the whole country where others apply to only a certain tiny town.
