In my efforts to understand international soccer better, what follows is my understanding of one aspect of the great game. Please indicate what is correct or what is wrong.

Let's use Arsenal of the English Premier League as an example.

1) As part of their pre-season schedule, they can play any number of matches against teams from anywhere in the world. The results have no bearing on the regular season.

2) During the regular season they go up against (all?) of the teams in the First Division, and Champions League opponents if they are in the competition. The results from regular season and CL are seperate. Is the Champions League tournament the same as the UEFA competition?

3) Is there ever an instance where a player from Arsenal (or any team) has to change kits during his teams regular season to participate in another tournament? Other than for FIFA World Cup.

Your help is appreciated in advance. Thank you.

1) Pre-Season or exhibition games results do not count on the regular season, nor do bookings unless there is a suspension dictated by FIFA.

2) Each international League has different rules regarding how they face opponents usually they have an away game and a home game against each team, you have to find out the specifics of the English Premier League.

Additional to the national league the best teams are called to participate on continental competitions, Europe has the UEFA competitions, South America Copa Libertadores but they are independent competitions to the local leagues. I'm not 100% sure about the difference between UEFA competitions and the UEFA Champions League but I think: the very best teams get instant places to the UEFA Champions League and the rest need to qualify through the UEFA Competitions.

3) Players cannot play for two different clubs at the same time. Sometimes they are 'lent' to other teams for short periods. They can only play for their national side and their club.
For example Terry Henry could NOT play for Arsenal on the EPL and play the UEFA qualifiers with Lyon. If he is on loan with Lyon he could not play for Arsenal.

1) correct. pre-season friendlies.
2) In the EPL, each team plays their opponents twice during the season. Once at home, once away. And yes, the EPL is separate from the UEFA Champions League.
3) I believe that there are times when a player might have to miss an EPL game to play for the national team for qualifying or what not.

1) Yep. There is no limit to how many teams they play and all matches have no bearing on regular season standing

2) Yep. They go against all opponents in whatever division they are in. They play against their group stage opponents and then against opponents from the other group stages (knock-out rounds) thereafter. No UEFA and European cup (Champion's League) are different.

3) No. Players aren't allowed to play for more than one team during any concurrent season unless they are on loan or transfer from one club to another.
