Believe there's some data that nothing experienced is ever "forgotten"; it's just that we can't always "retrieve" it. The basis for this was found in doing some brain surgeries, while the patients were awake: stimulation of certain portions of the brain brought back memories of events which had not been recalled in years.
Information that is not used frequently gets shoved back in the files (quick! name five people from your kindergarten class). Material that IS associated with a strong emotion can be remembered for quite a long time: people remember songs shared with an old lover, or where they were when they got the news about 9/11.
Hard concentration on a fact will help "set" it better in memory, for a time. Alcohol and other central-nervous-system depressants seem to interfere either with being able to remember data well or with being able to access it.
Think the jury is still out on the role of aging and memory, if there aren't dementia issues/brain damage issues. Older people may be a little more casually forgetful (and may be worrying about Alzheimer's--"my gosh, I forgot where I put my keys!). However, this might be just lack of concentration/not paying attention in the first place, which is a problem definitely NOT limited to older people.
