It was disturbing to hear that a woman aged 80+ was sacked recently from a church near New York and she is no longer allowed to take Sunday classes there! According to the guy in-charge of the church where she used to engage the Sunday classes, ‘God has stipulated specific roles for women and men.’ What a silly guy preaching so! I for one think that women should be allowed to continue with her teaching as it provides her a good pastime at her ripe old age but still active!

Thanks folks for your answers. Here are some comments, for a change…:
Dizzie – I agree religion has no place in public life, it is strictly one’s private way of life.
Tweetz – That’s exactly what she plans to do – quit the church but continue with her Sunday teaching in her neighborhood.
Melissah – People in such fields as Church should work towards emancipation of women all over the world.
MJM – All religious rules are changeable.
Raineydazey: Good for you, you have a woman preacher.
Happyman – If man and woman do not work together and reproduce, the world will sooner or later come to an end, won’t it happyman?
Giraffe: Yes, politics and religion should not be mixed.
Happygirl: The bible is simply a book full of rules and regulations for people to follow written by people themselves suit different needs.
Thanks again folks for your time and valuable views which I highly appreciate.

The verses they quoted to her are from 1 Timothy 2.
"(11)A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. (12)I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent."

Women SHOULD have equal rights in church, but they never will.

Face it, the christian religion is stereotypical and doublesided. There is no way to fight it! All they will do is quote you to death with scripture.

For example, they can turn around and quote Galatians 3:28 : "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

SO THEN WHY CANT WOMEN TEACH, IF WE ARE EQUAL!! See what i mean?

You cant fight with people like that. When you have religion there is no need for logic.

And i dont care how many people rate this question badly, read the bible, thats what you should be rating badly. All i did is pull this quote directly from the christian bible.

How can women willingly submit themselves to this?

I don't know the specifics of the case you sight, but the "guy in charge" is correct in stating that the Bible lays out different roles for men and women in the church. How those differences are applied varies from church to church. Some churches are very strict in never letting a woman have a position of authority or teaching over a man. Others have no such problem. Maybe she just needs to find another church.

Which religions distinguish souls by sex or color?! And yet the physical aspect of a being is regularly the object of discrimination. Justification of such discrimination is political and not spiritual whether in the Bible or the newspaper. The political expressions of religions or theologies must be rejected. The foundation of any theology is the soul's search for a way back to God and perfection. Playing politics in this context is corrupt.

I must be lucky , I have a woman preacher. My answer is this, God created us all equal, if we believe that then yes, women are equal to men, in or out of church. Many churches do not see it this way and many are changeing to accept more women in positions of power. The Bible had women who were essentually preachers, so why shoulden't we?

I agree with you but the problem with religion is that they make up their own rules and if you don't like or believe in them, then you need to go and find a religion that holds true to your values. The fact that we have a freedom of religion in this country is one of the reason extremist hate us so because we support other peoples beliefs, hopes, and dreams.

The beauty is that she has a right to switch religions if she doesn't agree...who tells a church what you can and can't teach that would be wrong

both one obviously have position self belief in Christ and His message of love as their middle. both have a position self belief in heaven, even with the undeniable fact that would determination on their concept of "hell". both (i imagine) would have a a ways a lot less strict interpretation of the Bible than a "fundamentalist". The Catholic faiths would have a extra ritualistic mind-set to amenities and characteristic a ways extra intensity of meaning. there's a ways extra symbolism contained in the Catholic faith than any of the others. Non-denominational church homes will be commonly plainer... no statues, candles, etc.

most religions do not allow women equal rights as men, i elect to not have a religion. however, for those who do want to be religious, yes, women should have equal rights in church. religion is one of the main cause for female oppression and if it were up to me, all religion ought to be banned from the world...

No. Because its better that way. Equal rights means equal duties. And we have to take care of women so that they don't have to work and give out babies that suck.
