I don't know anything about home security systems, so I'm not sure if this was installed by the builder or if this was something that was added on by a previous owner. Do the companies like ADT install their own stuff or would any random company be able to use whatever is already installed in my house????

Some systems are anti-takeover, meaning there is a dealer lockout code keeping competitors from taking it over. My advice is to contact a few smaller local companies, NOT ADT or a national monster company, you are much more likely to find a personable professional who actually responds to service calls. It may be that they can program and train you on the system as it is, or upgrade the controller & keypads. But expect them all to sign you up for central station monitoring which should range from $20-30 a month, beware the long term contracts too.

Companies use their own equipment and charge you a monthly fee. Some small local security companies may use others' equipment, but they usually have a preference or can only work with compatible equipment.

Few houses are made with a security system built in, unless it was made to order.

This is in reference to a security system that calls police, fire or a security screening service at a remote location.

It's possible. If you call ADT and ask them, they should be able to tell you if they can use existing systems. Or even better, call your realtor and have her find out who the previous home owner used for the service.

ADT installs their own equipment. I would have them come check it out as it is though, they will usually do free estimates and they could probably tell you who installed the previous system.

The first thing you need to do is check the keypad for any type of model number or descriptor. Try to google the information. Usually security companies like to mark up their equipment with logos as it is free advertising for them.
