Have you ever asked them what they might want for a pet? But if you haven't I would think that a dog would be a good pet for them. Especially if it;s a puppy, because your boys are still young and still have a lot of energy. And a puppy always wants to play. But if your boys won't clean up after the puppy you might want to find someone that can care for it while they are at school or playing with friends. What ever pet you get it make sure it is suitable for you and your family.

A hamster! It requires some work, but it's not that much and it's pretty easy! I got my hamster when I was 12 and still have her!:) Having a hamster requires:
1. Being gentle with the little critter
2. Bathing the little thing(you should help them with that so water doen't get in the hamsters eyes!
3. Feeding it
4. Giving it water
5. Cleaning its cage every week
6. Playing with it
It doesn't take much work, and they will probably find it fun! They only live for 1-3 years though. If you ask a vet about the best way to care for a hamster...it's likely to live longer. Also, use the internet and find some good hamster diets, that's what I do so that my hamster has a better chance of living longer! They're pretty easy to take care of and like to run on wheels and play in hamster balls! Your boys will have un with a hamster(s)

Hmm Guinea pigs perhaps, they do need there cage cleaned once a week. But they live a long time, you need to supervise them though when they hold them(I'm sure you would know this anyway but just incase you didn't.)
Have them do some research or you could as well cavymadness.com is good cavycages.com is good as well. Please think adoption first usually they are healither, becuase when someone rescues them they take them to the vets and stuff.
Also you will need to buy carefresh bedding as it is the best bedding out there for them. If you need more info check the sites I have provided also you can look on petfinder.com for pigs up for adoption. Good luck hun.

any pet is going to require maintenance but eight is a good age to get your boys an animal.Dog or cat.Cats are more independent .I prefer dogs myself and I don't own any cats but they would be less work.At the same time It would be a good experience for your boys to have a dog. They require attention and its never a good idea unless you want it to and its not just for the kids because they are more needy and will be around for 15 yrs at least.Theres always ginnie pigs.

A rabbit each. All pets require some maintenance and you must be prepared to care for them properly.

my children are almost grown and at that age I got them each a gold fish and another good fish is a Beta because of their color.Betas, got to keep them separated because they will fight, but they all do good in small tanks or fish bowls, you don't need to add air,and you can use spring water,so you don, have to worry about the water
