Masturbation is used for pleasure and gratification. When people are turned on and cannot have sex at the time they want to shake the feeling so they masturbate to relieve themselves of their horny emotions. Masturbation is safe and it can be done on spur of the moment advance. People also choose masturbation to get in touch with their body or to relax. Trust me, my personal experience is that masturbation is a great form of relaxation!
Rather then go out and have sexual relations with a stranger to relieve sexual tension, it is safer to stay home and please yourself either with your hands or toys, there are lots of masturbation options these days.

actually the question should be "why do people ever stop masturbating" its brilliant. I am currently so good at it that I am applying for a goverment grant in order to explore this area more deeply ... you see even that phrase is enough to set of a masturbation experience.. I am not sure if my goverment grant will be approved as a large number of people have also applied for the same reason and apparently there is some very stiff oposition

Because just at that moment when one is very horney there is no one arount to make sweet love to...so one makes love to them in their mind whilest masturbating...so it's not totally a solitary activity but one which is shared mentally with a loved one..or at least one who is lusted after.

Most of the time people do it when they feel like they want to have sex but no partner with them
people do that so they can feel the same pleasure as if they having sex
