I really do wonder what happened to customer service to turn it into what it is today. You have someone who answers the phone these days who sounds as if they would rather be attending their own funeral.

... And, don't get me started on waiters and waitresses who would rather be eating their own toenails than serving you food.

People at grocery stores act like it's an inconvenience to direct you to the correct aisle, and operators don't even say "please hold" before they direct you to the wrong person's voicemail.

GRRRRRR...

OMG, I have had such bad service and treated so poorly by some that I cried. I'm sure that working at Disney as a first job didn't help me, now I expect all places to have their employees be so kind and generous and to go above and beyond to help others.
Recently (and I mean within this month recent) I have wrote too and called two head corporate offices because of the bad service/customer care I had received. One of which will never ever receive service from me again, once I move in a few months. They also will definitely not get any recommendations from me either. It just seems as though that every person that works for that company has an attitude problem, and really don't give a care how their customers feel either. Out of the nearly hundred times I have called, I have only had ONE nice representative, which doesn't say much about the company.
My fiance and I have also received problems from another huge company. We have yet to go back and are in the middle of talking to a lawyer about this situation. (Story here if you would like to read http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgQQJ0varIMmTaK67A6yW.nsy6IX?qid=20060619041405AAUBjRX )
Oh I feel somewhat better now. Thank You! LOL

There was a time, for a few years there, when I bemoaned the steady deterioration of good customer service, but I have to admit that, during the past twelve months, I can't say that I've been ill-treated by a single customer service person--not a single bank teller, restaurant waiter, cashier, or even auto mechanic has given me less than excellent service with a smile. Sure, sometimes I've had to wait a bit, but only when there was a legitimate reason, when there were crowds. I hadn't actually realized it until I read your question and tried to think back to a bad situation I've had. The worst I could come up with was having to wait an hour to get a prescription filled at the pharmacy. I'd phoned it in more than twenty-four hours earlier, yet still had to wait for it to be filled. But I wasn't the only one waiting, and the pharmacist was obviously overwhelmed, so I didn't make a scene. And they gave me some gift certificates for being so patient.

I agree. On the one hand, I remember working those crappy jobs when I was younger, and I think some of the rude service I get is karma coming back at me! It is hard to stay happy in those jobs, but for those who choose not to get an education - which I did - and take it out on the world get on my nerves. I just try to avoid bad service whenever possible and try not to talk to people who look like they are going to have no idea what I am asking them. My favorite is when someone gets annoyed when you ask them a question and they are in a job where they are going to get questions! It's like, I don't spend eight hours a day here, and it is not my job to know where such-and-such is, that is what you are being paid for you a**!

Edit- also, it seems - fair or not - that you have to pay for decent service these days. Many of the places people are mentioning have mediocre products - McDonalds, etc. What really gets me is when you are paying that premium and still get the awful service. That, "I don't like my job so I am taking it out on the customer." They think they are too good to be there but some won't do anything to allow themselves the opportunity to get a better job.

Wow - reading these responses I think there needs to be a change in the system! brevejunkie - answerer number 72 said pay them more, but that means prices would increase, because they are a function of wages, product and so on!

Not sure of your question... BUT I can say for sure that as I LOOK and LOOKED back into the past, I definitely find that when one compares that(service, quality of products, customer care, etc) of yesterday to today.. there has been a MARKED decline in those aspects. I find it disgusting and I blame it mostly on the people themselves who allow this crap to exist. People have power but do not know it and do not know how to use it. NOWADAYS.. the services, businesses, etc are centered ONLY on MONEY and how to get more without doing anything. When I get poor service, I send emails to the Better Business Bureau or to the Corporate Headquarters.. when I get a bad product and that is quite often, I send the darned thing back for refunds.

Planned obsolescence (Come on - spell check!!)

That is just ONE of the things I hate
about these times. Appliances and
things that my parents bought that
lasted until I was grown, now only
last a few years till you have
to replace them.
There are veryfew repairs now,
stuff just gets replaced!

As far as bad service and poor
customer care, unless the human
being that is supposed to be
waiting on you has been trained
at home with good manners,
politeness, consideration, and
a general sense of ethics, there
will be no such thing as good
service.
They have a little training
in some stores with videos and
orientation, but I think it is
ignored by 90% of the trainees.
Their attention is elsewhere and
they don't take it to heart when
they are being taught to put
themselves in the place of the
customer.

The other day in Wal-Mart
I told a snippy little clerk that
if Sam Walton could see her
he would roll over in his grave!!
All his hard work and it has
ended up in the hands of a little
snot like her representing his
store (or at least that section)
For the most part the clerks
are nice in there. But you know
whereof I speak. Boys and girls...

I can answer that....I am in customer service for over the phone help. Company policy says that I should on be on the phone for 2 minutes or less. 2 min or less, unbelievable. I try my best to help out as much as I can but sometimes it is impossible to help in 2 minutes or less. They track your talk time with EVERY customer. My talk time is an average of 5 min per cust. ~Which is way high and I get into trouble ALOT for it. But they also scream at csr's for poor service. go figure. They want both, but is impossible. We are basically timed for how long we can be on the phone with our customers. That is why customer service is going down the tubes. Big companies want a fast buck. Service the customer fast and move on to the next. It is very sad.

So this is an inside look at what us csr's have to deal with everyday. We actually want to help the cust out as much as possible, but are timed and reprimanded if we do.

I used to work for this lady at a restaurant. She was rude (used a lot of profanity and everyday she told me I needed sex in my life, knowing that I don't agree with sex before marriage), she was racist, and she talked too much. Her customers would always complain that they were trying to eat, but couldn't because all she wanted to do was talk. They would say even though she is the owner, I was a much better waitress than her. And her cooks would drop the food on the floor and put it back on the plates. Her service just plain sucked. Plus she would lie and tell the customers that she made everything from scratch, when it was always pre-packaged.

You name it..THAT company has bad service! Part of the problem is that kids only work temporarily at these positions, and are no longer properly trained in every aspect of the store , or workplace. As for over-the-phone customer service, well, none of them seem to know what the heck they're doing, and it's hard to get help with anything w/o being on the flippin' phone all day long repeating your plight to representative after representative.

Yes. It is the Russification of America now.
More and more frequently people in the service industry are acting like they are doing you a favor and you should pay them well to insult and cheat you. I am actually surprised now when anyone does a decent job or seems to care about their customers at all.
Once I was horrified to see the following unfold before me at a movie theater. It was at a very slow time of the day business-wise. A woman in her mid thirties- fourties was very politely asking for a refund , discount or something and the young man in the box office was actually screaming abuses at her and telling her to get lost. The only explanation I think of later was that perhaps she was his mother and he wasn't bothered by this display. I'll never know.
Another time a few years back, we stopped on the road to get a bite to eat. Someone at our table dropped her napkin on the floor. The server just picked it up and handed it to her.

WOW today would be the ULTIMATE day of disgust for all that crap. It involves school though. Every university I've been to has the same problem: Nobody, that is SUPPOSED to know how to do their job, knows how to do it.!! When you go to one person who is supposed to be in charge, they send you to someone else who "knows what they're talking about" And then it's a constant run around!! I just get so aggravated with the school systems here!! It's like they don't really care what you have to have to succeed, as long as they've been paid. And then they are so rude and talk down to you like you are a 3 year old or something!! I say, if you aren't a people person, don't get involved in a job that requires to you WORK WITH PEOPLE!!!! (sorry for ranting lol) If you every plan on going to unc-pembroke or doing summer classes at a community college (Fayetteville Tech CC!) I suggest you make sure you handle everything yourself! If you can. Meaning, go to places where you have to get information yourself, don't rely on them to get it for you! Because when youre SUPPOSED to have received it, they can't tell you where it is. Duke all the way lol At least , from what I hear, you get your money's worth there!
