A' says if seventy five chickens are sold from what we have now the the feed will last for extra 20 days but 'B' says if we buy additional 100 chickens then feed will get over 15 days earlier. find the no. of
chickens both r hving now?

CALCULATION
I think my calculations involved more variables than I needed so they are going to look messy!

If F is the amount of food there is now, C is the number of chickens there are now and N is the number of days the food will currently last, we have F/(NC) = amount of food per chicken per day

If 75 are sold, the food will last for 20 days more, so we can say that F/((N+20)(C-75)) = F/(NC)

Alternatively, if 100 are bought, the food will last for 15 days less, so F/((N-15)(C+100)) also equals F/(NC)

We can quickly see that taking the reciprocal of the two equalities and dividing both sides by F gives:

(N+20)(C-75) = (N-15)(C+100)

I won't do the intermediate stages, but that results in C = 5N

Substituting this in one of the first equations one arrives at:

5N^2 = 5N^2 - 75N + 100N -1500,

The term in N^2 can be subtracted from both sides and simplification leads to 25N = 1500

Since C = 5N, C = 300 and N = 60

Let x be the number of chickens they have.
Let y be the amount of days the chicken feed will last.

x - 70 = y + 20
x + 100 = y - 15

y = x + 115
x - 70 = x + 115 + 20

0 = 195 -> unsolvable

Hmmmm, with the "pandemic" avian flu loooming, I don't think I would buy more chickens, overcrowding is one one way to spread the disease.
