It's more of a proof of concept, that it's possible to use the internet to get answers to more complex questions that can't be solved using the usual combination of search engines and existing articles/literature, without incurring huge overhead costs by employing answerers. Already they have successfully demonstrated that there are intelligent people willing to answer genuine questions from other people as long as they don't have to sift through too much crap or spam in order to do so.
Please note that, by asking this question on Yahoo! Answers, you will receive a response that is biased towards Yahoo! Answers, as any answerers who genuinely feel that they are being 'scammed' will have simply stopped answering questions.
