You just want to type, email and go online huh?
Don't want it to be slow?
Ok buy a dirt cheap pc with integrated graphics + sound with the slowest cpu around, you definately won't need anything over 1.5ghz as above this is only going to be needed for video editing, 3D modelling and high end gaming.
If your buying from a store then get one with only 256mb of ram. Take this ram out and sell it for a tenner on ebay and replace it with a 512mb or 1gb of ram for £25/£50 (if you opt for this from the store they will charge you 2 or 3 times as much) and this will ensure that your pc boots up and opens programs in the fastest possible time.
Oh also if you go for the spec somebody said above... if you can build it yourself you can get the same pc for about £200

try the compaq 1819 £425 from pc world. its good value for money and is not too slow and is at the end of line now so is a good computer to go for.
if you buy from the store reject all special deals as they are a ripoff as they seem good for the first few months then they become very expensive and most of them are useless. it is cheaper to get your own insurance and take it to a independent shop if it plays up
all 3 are the same model but with different size screens.
here the spec
AMD Sempron 3000+ Processor
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
512MB DDR RAM
80GB Hard Disk Drive
Dual Layer DVD ReWriter Drive
256MB ATI Radeon X200 Express Graphics
9-In-1 Media Card Reader
17" TFT Flat Panel Monitor

I have a Compaq/HP desktop computer. It was around 800 dollars and it has wonderful speed, works great to letters, browsing the net, has great memory. Never a problem. With that 800 dollar price you get a flat screen moniter, PC, keyboard, mouse, and printer. I would check it out at the Best Buy website.

No modern computer is that slow.
I use a Mac but a PC is more common.
Mac has a better firewall to stop viruses but both are safer with protection.
Good Luck.

Well the specs for that would be approximately-
80gb Hard drive
256mb ram
1.6ghz processor
As long as you have those features, you should be fine. It should cost round about £250-£300 if you know where to look.
