if you have broadband you are always connected to the internet. if you dont want this to be the case then when you dont want to be connected, turn off your modem and or router. if you have to login to something it could be that your computer tries to login upon startup. so if you turn off your modem/router, then it cant login or access the internet. after you turn off yoru modem/router and you still can get on the internet, then it might be someone elses wireless

if the b.b. connection is avail. you mite have the 'settings' in the properties for the type of connection you have in the 'always on' config. change this. if your on dial-up, you mite be viewing stored temp. files (does your browser on the very top line say "(working off line)". to prevent any access, of any type without your authorizing, get 'zone alarm', install, and in RIGHT CLICK the icon in your sys tray, and then check 'STOP ALL INTERNET ACTIVITY' (if you have a suspicious activity log, you may have become a 'zombie bot' which would mimic the kind a behavior you are citing: NOT GOOD!. malicious ware can turn on, 'phone home' and get new instructions in almost total stealth)

broadband connections are always "live" or connected to the internet. If you want to disconnect go to start - settings - network connections - right click on your connection and disable until you want back on

If you have wireless, it probably picked up somebody's unsecured connection and automatically connected to it. You are probably using their Internet connection.
