i was once a very poor, but very interested basketball player
i am short and slow
over time i became a pretty decent player and have had a lot of fun playing on intramural, church, YMCA, and industry league teams
unfortunately, the advice I received that helped me become a good player is the same old advice, the stuff you already know
1. practice, by yourself (I used to shoot for an hour or so a day many days, shoot, rebound, dribble out, shoot, rebound, and on and on)
2. run, as you noticed, stamina is key to playing basketball, especially full court basketball, start by running(and walking if you have to) but do a couple of miles several times a week, soon you will be able to run the whole 2 miles at a good pace, you will be amazed how this will help your play
3. play, look for chances to play, sign up, try, go, don't worry about being beat, laugh with them, i spent my years on the bench and that can be okay too

basketball is just a game, its not life, its not important in the big scheme of things,
but it has been a great hobby for me and added a lot to my health and enjoyment

Keep playing in pickup games, even if you are just running and passing. Work your way up from playing with less skilled players to more skilled as you get more games in. Be persistant about it. The play of others will eventually rub off on you naturally. Take an hour or so a few days a week to shoot and dribble around by yourself. The ball will be like second nature and easier to handle during game situations. We all know you need to practice to be a better shooter, so do that. Renting a basketball skills dvd from your local dvd store will help too. As for running long distances, the playing in pickup games for a while will take care of your fatigue; you are not in basketball shape and it happens to anyone who doesn't play alot or hasn't played in a while. You don't have to run every day to increase your lung capacity. You can run 4 days a week at 3 miles per day. The two off days should be for lifting weights. Make sure you pace yourself, especially the first few times you do it. If you feel you can no longer run, then take a rest. Then you can rest for the last day. You should first practice your dribbling. I would suggest using a tennis ball because it makes you feel for the ball instead of looking at it. When you replace the tennis ball with a basketball, it feels that much easier. Then you should do Mikan Drills (link below tells you what the drills are). These drills will help hone your skills. If you have a lot of time, then I would suggest shooting 700-1000 shots per practice. It may get tiring, but that will also help with improving your stamina to play the game. Start with short shots and work your way out. If you feel yourself starting to push the ball instead of releasing it, then you are out of your shooting range. When you feel you are ready you should try playing some pick up games at the park. Work on your side to side motion by moving side to side as quickly as you can. While doing this drill you have to keep your hands up like you are on defense. The key to defense is your footspeed from side to side and keep your hands up. You should also look at video of NBA games. All NBA teams run a variation of the motion offense. You can learn a lot from video because you learn when to make cuts, when to set screens, on defense how to fight through screens cover for your teammate if a pick was set. And if it is a video of your opponent you learn their tendencies and use it against them. It is a lot of work to improve yourself this much, but if you can do it then you'll get in much better shape.

Practice as much as you can- you should start running long distances in order to get into better shape. Find someone else that is looking to improve and practice with you for at least 3-4 hours a day if you have time. If you do this 6 days a week you will improve dramatically. 2 of these days you should play in games in order to see your improvements, and what you need to focus on when training. Hope this helps!

Well, first of all, you'll have to work on the latter problem. Start running more often, and hopefully you'll get used to running for a longer period of time. Second, practice dribbling the ball. When I played, my coach suggested to use a handball when doing this, so you don't have to look down at the ball during a game. Third, make sure you're a pretty good shooter. Practice layups and freethrows. Eventually, you'll start making in more baskets.

Take a certain amount of shots one day and than add on 10 more the next day. Do this for 2 weeks and I promise you will shoot 3's better than any of your friends. For example if you shoot 50 shots a day, the next day shoot 60, then 70, then 80, and so on for 2 weeks and then repeat at a higher amount. Remember practice doesn't make perfect, PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

My advice is to quit trying to play basketball and try baseball you can be clumbsy then, because theres a lot more people that suck more than you at baseball but only a little bit of people suck more than you do at basketball.
