You don't have to very athletic to compete. All you have to do is go left foot right foot a lot. As long as you limit the number of times you fall, you'll be fine.

The competitiveness is up to you. Most teams have some people who are very competitive. But they also have people out there to keep in shape for other sports, to be with their friends, or for many other reasons. As long as you aren't an active distraction, you will likely be accepted by the team. All they ask of you is that you try to help the team and try to have fun.

XC teams are often the most fun teams because they know their teammates the best.

EDITS:
Very few schools have "tryouts" for XC. I have personally never heard of a school cutting people from the XC team. There is a minimal effect on the budget if there are 8 people or 100 people on the team. Generally, teams just start practicing. The coach uses the practice performance to determine what races you run. Practice will generally be a 20-ish minute warmup and stretching, a workout that generally lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, a cool down and maybe some other exorcises (situp and pushup routines). It gets you into shape quick.

The number of meets vary by school. I am sure the coach could give you a schedule. The most common meet schedule, around me, is to have a small meet (under 5 teams) on a tuesday with basically a boys heat and a girls heat, sometimes they'll seperate out the fresh/soph boys (some states have fresh-soph boys run a shorter distance the varsity boys). Then there will be a big meet on saturday (anywhere between 5 and 40 teams). These meets will have more heats (Varsity, Junior Varsity, Fresh-soph, maybe even a freshmen only race for boys and girls). Talk to someone who was on the team last year, they can give you a much better idea of what your school does.

I was always lousy at P.E. in school except I could run. I was happy to get out of P.E. and join the cross-country team! You don't have to be fast, you just have to be able to keep running. The more you run in work outs with the team, the longer you will be able to go without walking and you will find that you will also get faster. It is pretty competitive amongst the top runners but don't worry about that. You just do your best and enjoy being part of a team.

I've been running cross country for three years and I love it. There is nothing like the feeling of a good hard run. I know plenty of people who are not particularly fact and I, myself and am not that athletic. Try to get your friends to do it with you. A good team makes a great season. Just give it a try there is not to lose.
