A lot of wacko answers so far.
Well here is my take:
The Mazda 626 of that era is a "cookie cutter" car. It looks just like 75% of the cars manufactured in that year.
The Mazda is a high quality Japanese import. Many Fords use the same platform of engine and drive line. It is no more to repair than a domestic car.
If you like the car, and it suits what you want to use it for, than by all means ignore the negativity here and buy it.

Personally, I and everyone I knew with a mazda 626 the transmission is the first to go. My new transmission costed 600.00 and it was 500.00 for labor. If anything, I would suggest you buy a honda. These cars are the best cars to have ( in my opinion). I wrecked my 1993 honda accord, but probably would still have it if I hadn't and it had 247,000 miles on it and the only major work I had done on it was to replace the distributor cap.

Forget craigslist, too risky. forget ebay, same. I would strongly recommend a SAAB, yes, really. A 900i will set you back about that much or less, i bought a really clean 1993 900i for $5,000.00 oh, 5 years ago, is in fantastic condition, excellent paint and interior, and the fuel injected 4 cyl twin cam? NON TURBO is very, very reliable. 400,000 km before needing a rebuild, but, choose wisely; either an auto or manual MAY give trouble, if poorly serviced/maintained, or just abused. Look for one with a full service history, one or two owners, and micky condition, you will laugh at the others in their gas guzzlers too. So good, in fact, i kept it when i bought a 9-5 turbo wagon recently.

No - foreign cars are not pretty. And they are expensive to fix.
