The reasons for migration are based on a complex combination of economic and political forces that both push and pull the process.
Pull factors include a need for labour in the receving country or community.
push factors include poverty, unemployment, war, violence or civil unrest.
The "advantages" or arguments in favor of economic migration include
1 the labour is needed in the receiving country for example many western countries rely on migrants to provide skilled work, such as doctors and nurses as well as unskilled work such as pickers or packers.
2 migrants bring a new, valuble cultural forms to the reciving society. sometimes this can cause difficulties but it can also make a society dynamic, forward thinking and open minded. from this point of view inward migration should be welcomed.
3 income is distributed to poor communities in developing countries as many migrants send money back home to their families and communities so it can be argued that migrant labour helps with some of the worst excesses of poverty in the developing world, however, this doesnt change anything long term for the migrants home community and can actually hinder development as migrants have left their home country so the work force and skills they have are not available.
The "disadvantages" or arguments against migration include.
1 migrant workers may be exploited. whether the migrant enters legally or illegally there is that danger. although many migrants have skills and education they are often employed in unskilled short term work such as the food packing industry and get paid the basic minimum.
2 The receiving community is suspicious. when communities feel under threat from inward migration there is a danger of racist violence and prejudice which makes it difficult for migrants to find housing and jobs. the media also cause to promote moral panic in the way it reports these issues and further add to the problem.
3 developing world communities can be threatend. the migrants own community is deprived of their labour skills whilst they work away. this can be damaging to thier own communities and can also create a gender and age imbalance. also the long term development needs of the home community is unlikley to be met by the short term benefits of money sent home.
