I presume you are trying to play avi files directly from the disc.
DVD players will only play mpeg files, although some newer ones will play divx and avi also. Simply renaming the file will not work.
You need to convert the avi to mpeg, you can use nero recode/nero digital if you like to convert and add menu's etc or for a free more basic option you can use a program called tmpgenc.
Whichever program you use the time it takes to convert a full movie will depend on your cpu speed.
Even with a fast pc this can be well over an hour per film just to convert the filetype.

You may be having problems due to some downloads being in NTSC (USA) & some in Pal (UK) or wrong video format
I recommend you use a program called DVD Santa on trial. It will convert all video formats to DVD format. It supports NTSC & Pal. It burns to all DVD formats.

You need some DVD converter such as "DVD ripper wizard". It can rip DVD into the most popular video formats and it also can rip CSS protected DVDs

they are different standards e.g. PAL for UK and mainland Europe and NTSC for the US. You cannot change the standard without an alchemist which are pretty expensive.. so best to try and get PAL Region 0 movies

you can the format of the film in two ways.
1)there is a software called "RENAMER".you can use it and rename the file with the desired extension or type you want to save.
2)if you have MS DOS with you you open the folder in which the file exists and type the command "E:>RENAME *.* *.(FILE TYPE WHICH U WANT GET CONVERTED)"
EG. E:>RENAME *.* *.MPEG
THATS IT.. ITS SIMPLE U CAN TRY IT.
