I know it's meant to be one of the oldest forms of medicine and lots of people swear by it, but I saw a Chinese doctor at the weekend who tried to charge me £35 for one weeks worth of specially blended tea!! They said I should take it for months as well!

Anyone had any success with Chinese medicine? Or know if £35 is reasonable? Or if there is somewhere you can try it cheaper?

And chinese medicine are cheap, and affortable.

It is very expensive in this country , but for certain ailments it is very good.
However , do you know what ingredients are in the medicine ? Can you read Chinese ? I certainly would not take medicine if I couldn't read the label !
I think the best thing about Chinese medicine is that the doctor actually takes time to talk to you & treats you as a unique case.

By the way the last herbal medicine I was given cost £120 for 2 weeks. It's not cheap.

I consider myself a skeptic, conservative and hard-nosed when it comes to trying unconventional methods like Chinese medicine. But after consulting with a Chinese doctor for a lingering condition, I have since then used Chinese herbs over the years to help treat a variety of illnesses, like colds, headaches and stomach aches. I really can't pinpoint the scientific means by which they work, but I can testify to the effective results of it's consistent result in treating my illnesses.

While I do not know the specifics of your treatment, I would suspect that the price may be somewhat justified. In Chinese medicine, a treatment plan is devised into a two-fold approach: 1) To treat the immediate, present illness -short term 2) To treat the underlying, root cause of the illness -long term (as a previous poster mentioned). This last approach usually takes months to treat, as the underlying problems has not been successfully addressed, resulting in the manifestations of your symptoms. Note that the underlying condition is not necessarily a physiological one, as it can also be an emotional one as well.

While a hefty cost may be involved, it is the complete and thoroughness of the treatment in which a good Chinese doctor will aim for when trying to treat a patient.

On the other hand, I feel there are a variety of factors that will determine the cost of a Chinese herbal/acupuncture treatment, so it is difficult to make a blanket statement about the price. Factors such as experience, expertise, types of herbs used, frequency of usage, modification of treatments and additional treatment phases are all factors that can determine the overall price.

Another poster mentioned the importance of watching out for harmful interactions, which may occur with current Western medications when used in conjuntion with Chinese herbs. This is an important reminder, as many Western MD's and Chinese doctors are not well versed in this area. In situations like these, it has been suggested that the patient slowly decrease the dosage and frequency of the Western medication, when taking the Chinese herbs. As always, it is best to speak to a Chinese doctor about this, and/or if you want, your GP.

Hope this helps

was it chinese herbs that you got or granules that dissolves in water? The price will depend on what illness you have and what underlying problems the doc feels that you must be treated. I would say the price is reasonable for a week supply (7 packets for 7 days) plus consultation. chinese medicine is so much better than western medicine as there are not as much side effects as the western. and chinese physicians look at your illness on the whole of your body and make sure you are totally well. western only give you treatment to cure your illness and when your gastric or liver is destroyed by the medicine, its completely none of their business. darn!

Be so very careful when taking Chinese medicine, whilst they can produce positive results they can also be very toxic and the doctor should be made aware of any allergy's you may have. As Chinese medicine has been known to cause contradiction when taken with other forms of medication.

Traditional Chinese Medicines work in slow ways as it gets to the root of your illness rather than symptoms on the surface. That's why the physician asked you to take it for months. It also help in maintaining your health. But beware of false physicians. There are many out there who use fake herbs to sell to the patients. Always go to a reputable one, be it that you're in England or anywhere in the world.
