Well my partner loves me and he has given me lots of things but never an engagement ring - soooo what's your point? Are ou going ot propose with a necklace?
Basic rule is people love presents - the only thing that would make me freak is if my boyfriend gave me an iron or a washing machine or something like that.

Get her a ring, and do not get her a cheap ring. You don't have to spend three months salary on it, like those stupid ads suggest, but get her a real diamond that looks good to the naked eye, and at least a full carat. If she has small hands that is large enough; if her hands are larger, fingers are longer, you will need to get a larger stone, and should probably choose pear or princess shaped instead of a regular solitaire setting.
I hate to sound like the money is such a big deal, but people will mock you if the ring looks cheesy, and they will hurt her feelings, even if it's not a big deal to her personally. You can always ask her what kind of ring she'd like, but I think it's more romantic to surprise her. Ask one of her girlfriends what kind of rings she likes, or look at her other rings to get an idea.
Women have been wearing two rings at the same time for years, and they are fine with it. Make her proud of you, and make her feel special by giving her something that is as beautiful as she is to you.

You mean in order to propose? I'm confused.
If you mean to get engaged, I think a ring is the only way to go. does it have to be a diamond? No. Some people can't afford them, some people prefer a different stone. When in doubt, ask her mother or good friend what they think she'd like. That's the safest bet. You dont' want to start off with an insult to your future wife.

CRYSTAL? if you love her only diamonds will do. And it should be a proper engagement ring. If you are proposing she will expect a ring not a necklace, so you may get a confused reaction.
Also people change their neclaces to suit their outfits, but you can wear a diamond ring with anything, and they should endure everyday wear (especially if platinum with diamonds-very tough).
If you want it to be different you could get one designed for her so it would be the only one of its kind (depends on budget though!)

The engagement ring is an eternal symbol of love - the circle of love complete upon the finger that leads to the heart.
It is a sign to the outside world.
By all means discuss the idea with her, but do not push too hard or you may push your luck.

It doesn't make any difference if she already has 15 rings.
Most women want/like the engagement ring; and what it represents.
It's easily shown to others. It's QUITE recognizable. She can admire it while doing various activities. Get her the ring. :)

To propose? Not really...it should be a ring.
But if you're not proposing, it's fine to buy her anything you want.
I would definitely advise against earrings, though. Why?
Because they come in a very small velvet box...just like a ring.
If she sees a small velvety box...she will immediately assume there's a ring inside and feel disappointed when she opens the box to find earrings.

Stick with tradition and buy her a beautiful engagement ring - it symbolizes so much, don't ruin it by doing something different.

Umm, the ring is what tradition says, so why be different when she could get upset?
