I have heard that it can cause chemical actions harmful to fish. Is this true? Or is this just a ploy by the sellers of pond liners?

It's too brittle after prolonged periods outside.

You need something that can stretch and move as the seasons change.

Not sure about the chemical bit, but the poly won't stand up to the weather for long.
It can't shrink or stretch with the heat and is much less resistant to punctures from stones etc. It's really worth the money for a decent liner.

i have recently helped to build a pond and was told this too. You can use almost anything for the underlay from newspaper to old carpet, but because the actual liner is going to be in contact with the water its best to use the proper stuff!!!!!!

Buy a purpose made pondliner, easier and most are guaranteed anything from ten years to lifetime depending on cost. Butyl rubber is the best
