I am on telewest broadband and have bought a Wireless router. But can't get it to work on my laptop. The laptop finds the wireless connection ok but won't connect to the internet. Do i need the router to be connected to a desk top pc in order to get my laptop to work. I just want to be wirless on my laptop thats all?

Disable the encryption on the router and see if it works that way. If it does then your encryption settings on the laptop are wrong.

If it doesn't then doublecheck your routers network settings (static IP vs DHCP, etc). If you are using DHCP make sure you have it turned on in the router. If you are using a static IP make sure the IP is within the range the router is set to allow.

the router only needs to be connected to your modem. i assume you have a wireless card since you say that your laptop can find the connection. try sitting right next to your router. also, when you set up your router did you give it encryption or a username/password? you might want to try calling your router manufacturer to make sure you installed it properly. or it could be your card.
