It is a what chemists call a transition metal. It has similar properties to nickel and platinum. With all these type of things it is a supply/demand problem. As it is currently widely used in catalysis and I suppose the price could go either way depending on whether there are new ore discoveries.
It is neither a rare earth or radioactive element.

It is a Platinoid in the Transition Metal Group. The Platinoids include Plattinum, Iridium, Osmium, Palladium, Rhenium and Rutherfordium. Ever since Russia tightened the supply of palladium and other platinoids their prices have skyrocketed.

id be leary about investing in precious metals on ebay, i think it is used mostly industrial as a catalyst (speeds up chemical reactions) dont know if thats a good price or not or what the prospects are
