I was in my office in San Francisco fixing our server. My boss called me and he said to pack up and leave. I didn't know what was happening then. Fortunately, there was a television in the break room which I turned on immediately. As soon as I saw images, I saw a video of the second plane crash into the Twin Towers.
I was completely frozen. For a few minutes, I stood there in front of the television while thoughts raced in my mind.
I suddenly found myself in the middle of chaos and confusion. I packed up and left for home. Unfortunately, everyone else was in a rush too. I got home 3 hours later which was just too much since it only took me 30 minutes tops.
So many questions left unanswered. Somehow, I suddenly felt vulnerable. Unsafe. Unprotected. I was scared and the horror didn't go away instantly.

I was walking to work in Boston, listening to the radio when I heard a plane hit the world trade center. I imagined it was a prop plane, and someone had gone off course. The radio commentator thought much the same thing. It’s a large building, how do you not see it in front of you, they joked. By the time I got to work, the news was much more serious. I changed away from my entertaining radio station to an all-news station. I tried to pull up information on my computer but nothing would load up. I’d learn later because too many people in the country were trying to do the same thing. The radio announced that a second plane hit. I was the only one on my floor with a radio and people started huddling around my office. I was eventually able to pull CNN or MBNBC up on my computer, and saw a picture of the towers up in smoke. I was in a state of disbelief. I wasn't yet afraid, just shocked. Then a plane hit the pentagon. Now I was afraid. It felt as if every plane in the air was coming down. We didn't know why or who. We'd never heard of Al Qaeda before, and certainly didn't know how to spell it.
The first tower fell, according to the radio. News was changing by the second, it seemed. The reporter was out of breath as he described it crumbling to the ground. “Could I be hearing you correctly, did you say the tower fell?” I thought back to when I was in the 2nd tower on a High School field trip. All I could think of was the cute gift shop at the top floor full of New York City tourist trinkets. I remember pressing my face against the glass to look straight down to the city streets.
There was an order for all planes to land immediately. This concept was incredible. Wherever you are in the air, land NOW. Once the 2nd tower fell, I wanted to get out of Boston, immediately. The city seemed to empty at the same time. I walked as fast as I could to the overcrowded train station and somehow found my father. While waiting for him, I remember thinking “this is a good target, I want to get out of here NOW.” We slowly pushed our way down, deep into the subway system. This did not feel any safer than the main train station. Nowhere felt safe. Everything was threatening. Everyone was terrified.

I was standing on 5th ave near the empire State Building, when the first plane flew directly over my head, only about 300 feet off the ground. I watched as it continued downtown, and then veered upward into the WTC. I ran inside my building, and alerted others. When the second plane hit, I left my office, and watched from the street. When the first building collapsed, i left my office for fear that the Empire State Building may be hit, and began walking to the Bronx, caught a bus, then a train, and finally got home in Ct. at 3:00, about 5 hours later. I never turned back to look, because it was far too emotional. I lost 2 friends in the attack.

I was in Australia, working VERY late on assignment due within the following few days! It must of been 2 to 3am in the morning.
The TV was on in my bedroom and the footage of planes were crashing into these buildings was playing in the background...
I wasn't really paying any attention to the TV (news)...
At a glance, I saw the footage and thought "oh sh#t, imagine that" but I actually thought it was a movie as it was so unreal.
In the following 10 mins, and just hearing repeated footage and constant coverage made me re-look at the TV... it took me a good 5 minutes to realise what I was watching was actually for real !!!
It was a real shock, but I got up the next am to discover that EVERYONE was talking and showing concern about it, and that's when it really hit home for me!
That's when I believed it ACTUALLY did happen...
...this is a real prob for me, I have a tendency to block out reality HOPING it's not real...
...I tell you, bad news doesn't go down well with me!
I'm initially in denial until someone has to knock it into my head!

Wait a second Saddam was flying the plane and that was George HW Bush and Rumsfeld with Saddam at the airport lounge. Not the current president Bush. President Bush was practicing his upside down reading when it happened. Go big Red Go

I was teaching English at the University of Mexico in Mexico City. The President of the university pulled me and several others out of class, told us what happened, and to go to the teaching auditorium to watch. What amazed me is that later, when the discussion came up in class, many of the students and working professionals that were studying there said the Americans deserved it, that we had it coming. I decided then and there that relations between the US and Mexico really suck, and made it a point of deciding that all the illegals should get the hell out of the USA if that is how they feel about their neighbors.
Sorry, timed out. Anyway, a friend of mine died in the first WTC building. My brother and ex-sister in law were supposed to be there ( in both buildings!!) that day but were late.

I was on my way home from work. I thought they were talking about a movie, because I only caught the part about a plane flying into a building, but when I turned to different stations and they were talking about the same "movie" I realized it was true.

We were up and had no idea what was going on. Our son was little then, and so the TV was on PBS. The world was going up in smoke and we were watching Barney! I went to get my haircut and found out what was going on when I turned on the radio. I went straight back home and we never moved from in front of the TV all day.
