I love this question. Nobody really knows since the Department of Defense can't be audited and most of the expenditures would be classified. The best guess is TWO BILLION DOLLARS PER WEEK (down a rabbit hole). Not known is the amount of interest that will be incurred, since taxes were cut -- not assessed to cover the war costs as one would expect. Future generations will be paying for the Iraq War. Also not known are costs associated with life-time care which will be needed for the military injured in Iraq and for the social services needed to support their families. There are a host of unknowns that were glossed over as the proponents of the invasions assured Congress and the public that we'd be greeted with flowers (Cheney) or that the war would take days or weeks but not months (Rumsfeld). How many in Congress would have agreed to "offer the chance for democracy for the people of Iraq" at TWO BILLION DOLLARS per week for this long AND for as long as Bush holds the office of president?
What real domestic programs might have been supported instead? Let us count the ways: Social Security secured; Hurrican Katrina damages repaired; a Nationall Health progam instituted; ports secured; improved airport security devised to detect explosives and x-ray all checked baggage.

Do you know the cost of not fighting the war against the terrorists in the part of the world where they are bred, fed, housed, and supported????
They cost of not finishing the action is: the terrorists will come here AGAIN.
Development? Have you seen what it has done to our once beautiful cities? Cheap and trashy looking is what I call it.
Education? Throwing money at education is not the answer. Parental involvement is needed. The more education changes, the worse it gets.... it has become nothing more than a political football. "No child left behind"... right.... now all are kept behind. In the 1960s they started screwing with public education in a big way.... they totally screwed up an educational system that enabled America to become the greatest country on earth, and educational system that created great inventors and clear thinkers..... now look at the mess, politicians who speak to the left while farting to the right and vice versa, junk products designed to fail, etc.
The problem with war nowadays is not the cost in $$$, it is the length of it, drawn out by divisive actions from the left and fear of offending. I don't give a damn about life on Mars, if it is there, it can stay there.

properly, we´re unlikely to be conscious of till the end result.... if interior the top, congress indicators some invoice forcing us to depart, than no.... which would be +$439 billion down the drain and +3500 lifeless infantrymen and +20,000 wounded... and for what? So the democrates can taint the republicans call and win the presidency? WWII become the main costly war in historical past, (in human lives besides as financially) yet something solid did come of it... up till 1945, europe become the main destabilizing stress interior the worldwide. It took the deadliest war in historical past to end that. precise now, the middle east is the destabilizing stress, and if we are able to deliver forth democracy (that's contagious, look at maximum Democratic countries and their buddies) and convey approximately peace, and help Iraq become a better united states of america like we did to S.Korea, Japan, Germany after their respected wars then truthfully... truthfully those expenditures are worth it... it makes the worldwide a much greater helpful place and is one step closer to worldwide peace. you may look on the countless different countries the place we had forces and then left, Vietnam, Somalia, to call some... you appear to be an clever man or woman so i don´t think of i might desire to describe what take place there as quickly as we left and what continues to be take place in between the countries.

A new study by two leading academic experts suggests that the costs of the Iraq war will be substantially higher than previously reckoned. In a paper presented to this week’s Allied Social Sciences Association annual meeting in Boston MA., Harvard budget expert Linda Bilmes and Columbia University Professor and Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz calculate that the war is likely to cost the United States a minimum of nearly one trillion dollars and potentially over $2 trillion. The study expands on traditional budgetary estimates by including costs such as lifetime disability and health care for the over16,000 injured, one fifth of whom have serious brain or spinal injuries. It then goes on to analyze the costs to the economy, including the economic value of lives lost and the impact of factors such as higher oil prices that can be partly attributed to the conflict in Iraq. The paper also calculates the impact on the economy if a proportion of the money spent on the Iraq war were spent in other ways, including on investments in the United States.

The 9/11 attacks on the US cost our economy $$ trillions. A repeat attack of the same magnitude would again cost us $$ trillions.
As for the 'more productive purposes', you do know that all the spending listed there is really not Constitutionally authorized spending by the federal government, don't you?
If you cared about government spending, you'd have to realized that the government has spent trillions and trillions of dollars on unconstitutional outlays - social security, welfare, etc. In fact, unConstitutional spending accounts for over 1/2 of the $2.4 trillion budget. Does that bother you?
It bothers me. But then, I support the Constitution.

The cost of Iraq is American blood. This is blood well spent. Iraq will be a success only if it falls into civil war. The whole world will see how stupid the Muslim sects are. Alot of terrorists will fight on the Sunni side. The Shia militias will kill alot of them. It will be marvelous and fun to watch on television as well. I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully Syria, Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon will get involved as well. That would be really amusing. Think about all the "innocent" Muslim women and children that would die. Comedy! Hilarious! For Allah! Mohammed would be pleased! HA HA HA! Can't wait!

Do you mean like the trillions of dollars the Muslims dictatorial countries make from petroleum, and barely invest in their own people, but rather teach hate, and support terrorism? The exception would be Turkey, a model Muslim state that is moderate and centuries ahead of any other Muslim countries.
This war is important. War on Islamofascism is monumental, and must be fought until it is eradicated.

THE coast of the war will be easily recouped when and if we gain control of Iraq .
MILLIONS of barreles of oil translate to billions of dollars in the long run and control over the american dollar which is tied to oil prices .
IT is runaway inflation directed into the oil market an dunless we get control of it our mney will become woth less and less each day until it has no benefit for others to trade with it and then we are sunk .
