Well it depends on what kind of ipod do you want you could get them at best buys or circut city either place is the same price.Here are some you can get .....

ipod nano1gb $150 plays 240 songs

ipod nano 4gb $250plays 1000 songs

ipod video40gb $400 plays 15000 songs
ipod mini $250 plays 1500 songs (comes in 4 different colors like pink,blue,lime green and gray)

Store like Walmart and Target carry them at teh base prices that you would find at any apple store.
I bought mine off of ebay and got some extra accessories and still ended up paying more than $80 less than I would have in a store

Its 25 dollars less at amazon.com and theres no tax or shipping, you can't go wrong. For a 30GB ipod the price is 300 from apple whereas amazon offers it for 274

You can buy direct from Apple, online or visit the Apple Store. Or try macmall.com. iPod has different models, I personally will buy the "nano" version since it's cheaper but it functions like others.

I bought mine directly through Apple. They run about average on prices. Unless you're a student and then you can use an educational discount.
