Christopher Columbus did not discover America, nor did Eric the Red, or Father Brendan. You cannot discover land where thousands of people live, they discovered it.
People from Asia crossed over when the land between the two continents was grassland. The last ice-age piled ice miles high in the Northern regions, causing the oceans to drop. There is a great amount of scientific evidence that the low area West of Alaska was not effected by the ice, but remained dry, and eventually was covered with grass. Herders followed their herds to what is now Alaska. They are to true discoverers of America.
Columbus did discover, just the same. He discovered a way of sailing with the wind and ocean currents, and being able to return, in spite of his clumsy ships not being able to sail upwind. He studied material floating on the ocean surface, once in a while he would find parts of tropical plants floating toward England from the South-West. He knew that the currents near the equater moved toward the West, therefore the wind and ocean currents were actually drifting in a circle.
In his native Italy, his name was Christaphono Colombo. To the Spainards he was Christabal Colon. He was given the name Columbus as a classical name to be recognized all over the world.

He is most recognized for discovering America but he truly discovered what is today called the West Indies. He was actually trying to find a new route to India , thinking he had arrived there he called the inhabitants Indians. The tools he used were the telescope, astroglobe, and maps.

Christopher Columbus, a venetian but lived in Spain, sailed westwards hoping to see China on the other side, because he believed that the world (earth) was round. He did'nt realise that
he would see America first. Thus, he accidently discovered America, thinking it was China!

Chris is the most common name? Could've sworn it was Mohammed... But he was the Westerner who discovered islands off the coast of North America, with the help of "tools"-his three ships and their crews. I'm sure he also used his brain and probably a compass.

Christopher Columbus arguably discovered America with faulty navigation and a boat! He really had no idea where he was at.
