Fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury vapor, which is toxic. Aside from the mass of filling a landfill, regular incandescent bulbs don't have as big an environmental impact, but fluorescent bulbs really need to be sent to a special disposal facility that can reclaim the mercury before disposing of the bulb itself.
