Why, with a HP printer I purchased THIS year brand new - have issues like when you try to cancel a print job - it takes about 20 minutes to clear it out of the print queue? I have a totally great computer. Is there anything I can do about it?

It is the windows printer management system. It takes forever for the spool to clear. You can restart the computer after canceling a job. Inconvenient yes, however it is effective.

I've found that it does not really matter how good your computer is. The speed of the printer (size of printer RAM mainly) as well as your connection method (eg firewire, USB 1) plays a much larger role.
It also depends on which programs you are using to print, and in which format it is transfered to the printer.
Also, most of the newer printers allow quicker cancellation because they maintain double data channels from the computer (most older printers receive cancellation instructions on the same channe they received the file to print on, so if the RAM is small and the file is large it'll take ages for the channel to clear.
