something like, it is illegal (or unlawful) to remove this tag unless you are the consumer? (I know it doesn't say it in those exact words but if you know what I am talking about and you know the answer please let me know.)

Probably because of authenticity, or for tracking reasons.

Good question!

My kids call that the mattress police. However I do think there are reasons for that, it is a tracking system and in case you sell the mattress then the next person will know what it was made from and where. There are some ugly mattresses out there made in and with shabby materials. Saw a whole show on that and it was disgusting.

Those tags have the number of the inspector on them. In case sometime during the process of getting them to the stores they find that somethings wrong with it, they know exactly where to pin point the problem.

It's actually to give the material list used in making the mattress. It's for fire safety. DO NOT REMOVE THIS TAG! *smiles*

it was enacted in the old days because old matresses were sold as new and i can't remember what disease started it, you'll have to look it up. people were getting sick from getting matresses that other people had died from by contracting the disease that killed them.

So that the person who buys the item knows it is not second hand, perhaps, but I'm only guessing.
