The four main, or cardinal directions are North, South, East and West; the intermediate directions are Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast.

The needle on a compass that's working properly will naturally point to the north. You turn the case until the lettering for north matches up with the way the needle is pointing, then the dial will indicate to you which way the other directions are.
