Forks and sharp knives go upside down because of the kids. Sometimes it gets left open and the thought of them falling on it scares me. Besides that, have you ever gone to grab a handful to put back in the drawer and got a fork tong rammed between your finger and the nail? lol Spoons are right side up.

Always handwash cutlery. Being in the dishwasher will dull the edges since they are slightly bounced around during washing.

It's all a matter of choice. I prefer putting the silverware in the divider with the tines pointing up. Either way, you can't go wrong. The point of the dishwasher is to clean. If it works efficiently, the position of dishes and silverware, would not warrant much concern. Peace!!!

Eating side up! You want any food and cleaner residue to run down to the handle end.

the handle should go on the bottom so the part that you use is open for a better clean and the soap and water can really work at getting all food and germs off it

Neither, put them on the top rack laying flat. Wooden handles can be brought back to life with olive oil.

I put mine pointy-ends up.
At Mom's though, it goes the other way because Dad has no depth perception and he doesn't like getting poked by forks and whatnot.
It just seems to me that they'd get cleaner pointy-ends up.
