Can anyone offer some good suggestions or ideas on how to stop biting fingernails. I am 43 and I have been doing it since I was in the third grade. It looks horrible and I don't like doing it. I feel that I do it for some sort of comfort, like some people eat for comfort. Any suggestions as to why I do this and how to stop would be greatly appreciated. Serious answers please!

I use to have the same problem. Here's some helpful advice from a now ex-nail bitter... Keep your fingernail trimmed short, and always carry fingernail clippers [or the like] with you [I carry a pair on my key ring, a key ring that separates, so I can trim any problems if I'm driving, which is where I frequently use to have such problems]. Once you break the habit of bitting them, you can then let them grow out, if you desire long nails, but always keep the clippers handy, just in case. Also, nail bitters tend to tear their nails into the quick, which then makes them hurt. If this happens, put a drop of super glue on the exposed flesh; it'll stop the pain, lasts for quite a while, and is safe to use [was originally created to replace stitches, but didn't work well enough for that purpose]. Hope the advice helps.

I just had fake nails put on to try and stop biting....again. I swear I was biting my nails in the womb. I do well for a while, but when I am hit with a really stressful situation, it's back to the biting. I hate it! Good luck!

This answer will definitely get you to quit!!! Think of everything that you touch throughout the day and how often you wash your hands. Every time you put your nails/fingers in your mouth you are putting more germs, bacteria, and who knows what else into your mouth/body. If that doesn't completely gross you out, make you quit....then its hopeless

Try putting on nail polish. It works for me. But when the nail polish wears off, bitting again. So, I have to do my nails very diligently.

they make a nail polish that has a bad taste when bitten to remind you to stop. you should try that. you could also wear gloves or something. remember that you WANT to stop, that it is a bad habit, and also doesnt look good
