To be called literature the work must have a coherent narrative, or insights and value, beyond a mere logging of dates and events, such as diary or ships log. Literature that recounts adventure, exploration and conquest is often grouped under travel literature, but it also has its own genre outdoor literature; these genres will often overlap with no definite boundries. This article focuses on literature that is more akin to tourism.

One of the earliest known records of taking pleasure in travel, of traveling for the sake of travel and writing about it, is Petrarch's ascent of Mount Ventoux in 1336. He states that he went to the mountaintop for the pleasure of seeing the top of the famous height. His companions who stayed at the bottom he called frigida incuriositas ("a cold lack of curiosity"). He then wrote about his climb, making allegorical comparisons between climbing the mountain and his own moral progress in life.

What is 'travel writing'? In the 1960s and 1970s, it was mainly the description applied to the journalism that appeared in the travel sections of newspapers and magazines. Then as now, a journalist would visit somewhere pleasant, record its virtues as a holiday destination.

Travel writing can involve both traveling under challenging circumstances and writing under deadline; these writers must be able to handle pressure.

EDUCATION

You will have a blast writing a travel guide. You will visit places you’ve never seen before, and see places you’ve already visited through different eyes.

You may be hired to write a travel guide even on a topic that is already well covered. .. There are more than 350 travel guide publishers, so if you want to write or update a travel guide, there are plenty of opportunities.

Getting Hired to Write a New Guide

Andy Herbach and his partner Michael Dillon came up with the idea for a series of pocket-sized guidebooks to help travelers translate foreign language menus more easily. The idea came from their own experiences. They had difficulty translating menus despite their proficiency in Spanish and French, and realized that others would as well.

Do your homework, create a powerful proposal.
The following four steps will help get your own travel guide published:

1. Create a list of travel publishers

2. Create your proposal material

3. Contact the publishers by sending them your proposal material

4. Once hired, start writing the book

As you can see from these steps, just as in attempting to get published in a periodical, it is best to do all your homework up front, pitch the idea, and

only after getting hired to start writing your travel guide.
Getting Hired to Update a Guide

While publishers prefer to hire people with previous experience to update guides, you can break into this field by first getting experience writing travel pieces for newspapers or magazines (covered in the previous section of this guide). This shows that you can write and research, and researching is the key to updating guidebooks.

Each will have their own selection process, so be prepared to have to fill out forms, do phone interviews, submit writing samples, etc. This is a very competitive process, so remember to put your best foot forward through all these trials. You may know that you are a brilliant writer and a dynamite researcher, but they won’t until you show them.

I think you should specialize.
If you decide to travel are you prepared to carry a laptop or do you prefer to write down notes? Do you have a sense of humour?
Are you prepared to sleep in flea pits?
I would read the maximum and see what you like.

Good Luck .
Maybe you should use your present Avantar, it looks very nice.
