There's going to be arguments for both and I think the circumstances largely dictate the answer - for example, if the hero who runs from the battle field only to defeat the enemy later - is severely outnumbered at the time he flees, his strategic decision could be applauded. Of course someone may argue this was cowardly and they should have stayed and fought - if there appeared to be an even match, than perhaps our hero should have stayed to fight and the outcome may have been decided than and there. Two separate circumstances, both reasons to stay or flee, same result.

If you're asking about actual war battle, my answer would be that your question can't be answered intelligently without knowing the exact situation.
In an infantry battle, the situation must be carefully studied before deciding to fight or retreat. If the situation appears to be hopeless, there is no great honor in loosing all the men in order to take down a few of the enemy.
Often soldiers who retreat, resupply themselves with ammunition, fill in the ranks with replacements, and come back stronger than ever.
Hitler gave his soldiers orders to stand and fight. No one was permitted to retreat under any circumstances. You know how his army ended up.
So again, there is no one answer to your question. It depends on the situation.

I would have to say a real hero stands and fights because that means you are fighting for a reason and you are fighting under somebody elses terms. Its a little bit of a cowardess thing to do to run away then come back and fight so that you have the element of surprise, then you are fighing under your own terms which makes victory somewhat less gloryous

The one who is willing to stand up to the enemy and hit the enemy head on. If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything.
