You can use liquid laundry detergent without bleach in place of carpet cleaning fluid in any automatic carpet cleaner. In place of the defoamer agent that they try to sell you put a little bit of liquid fabric softener in the compartment for the dirty water that you pick up out of the carpet. My family has done this for about 20 years now with great results and it is a lot cheaper than the stuff that they will sell you for the carpet machines in stores. Think about it...you wash your clothes in the stuff and it takes out grime. Does the same thing for your carpets.

I have a white carpet and soon after bought a Vax Rapide - on offer at the local B&Q. I have not looked back! First glass of red wine - it sucked it all up and cleaned the carpet - no stain. a whole mug of tea - same, no stain, and just last week I spilt French dressing (oil and vinegar and spices) even that has come up without a stain. It leaves the carpet almost dry and is good for just general cleaning and freshening.
(No, I don't work for Vax - just think they are brill!)

i have tried vannish (pink bottle with brush built in) it did a great job on muddy foot prints - but now the carpet has clean patches and the rest looks duller in comparison! so i will look at getting a steam clean or somthing to do the lot.

My mum uses vinegar for everything. Floors, mirrors, carpets, upholstery. Believe it or not it works and it also kills bad oders. Even though its a bit smelly at first it soon fades away with a good air freshener!!!!
