If you are running windows XP w/SP2 (service pack 2) you should enable the pop up blocker. Odds are you have spy-ware in the system. Here is a link to a couple of apps I use to "clean" my computer... All apps found in 1 place ...

Is this popups actual error msg or just some Web advertising gone wrong?

If actual, follow the scanning tool advise, if just Web advertising faux pas, this is what you do:

1. CTRL-ALT-DEL modern Windows systems bring up Task Manager. Careful this must be done one and only once.
2. On NT/XP/2000 choose the Process tab, finding the correct browser active program in the list, it could be iexplore.exe or firefox.exe or similar, this step is forcing Windows to do by your command; it maybe skipped.
3. Forcing "End Task" on it.

Fix the registry. Try running system restore to an earlier date before your pop ups started. Or you can download a registry repair product to see if cleaning up the registry helps. I use Ccleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com

if you have firefox browser, install adblock. see if that works.
the best thing to do is not to click on the popup but close it with keyboard commands such as alt-f4.
