No, it is not. On August 27, 2006, Mars will be faint, over 200 million miles from Earth, and too close to the Sun to see.
On August 27, 2003, Mars came the closest to the Earth in a few thousand years, although the margin by which it did this was slender. It was a beautiful sight then.
You must have received a passitaround email that said that Mars will come close to Earth on August 27. You misinterpreted this as being 2006, because the original sender did not put in a year.
If people continue to forward it, then it will come up over and over again in the future, causing people to say that Mars will come close to Earth on August 27, 2007, August 27, 2008, August 27, 2009, August 27, 2010, August 27, 2011, and so forth and so on, even when Mars is nowhere near the Earth.
So please. Kill this email. Don't forward it to anyone.

Mars is on the other side of the Sun this year and not visible at all from Earth. That E-mail is a hoax.

Oh, god, that "2.54 light years" answer is even more ridiculous than the original hoax email. At its closest, Mars is about 35 million miles away. That's roughly .02 light-years, if my calculations are correct.
Heck, the Sun is only 8 light-minutes away, and I think that Saturn is about 2 light-hours away.

its a hoax, this notice actually applies for the August of 2003, when Mars did come close, but of course not so close it is the size of the moon, thats a legend.
Check out www.snopes.com for details of this hoax.

if it's really close it looks like a bright red star that refuses to blink
