But as for winning gold medals, John B. "Doc" Taylor was the first African American Olympic gold medal winner in the 200-200-400-800 meter medley relay in 1908 (since replaced by the 4x400m relay)

William DeHart Hubbard was the first African American man to win an gold medal in an individual event during the 1924 Paris Olympics

Alice Coachman was the first African American woman to win a gold medal in the 1948 Olympics

Vonetta Flowers the first African American female athlete to win a gold medal in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games

Shani Davis became the first African American man to win an individual gold medal in the 2006 Winter Olympics

Jesse Owens was the first of significance, that got a great deal of exposure, but i am not sure who the 1st was.
