---Is Catholic--

It is important to note that there is a difference between "official" position and a position taken by the Pope, Secretary of State, or an important Cardinal in the Vatican. There are plenty of positions out there, but few official one. However, non-official positions do carry weight, but these positions should not be taken as THE position that all Catholics MUST follow. Even if an un-official position comes from the Pope, there is still plenty of room to reasonably disagree and formulate new solutions and views, while at the same time taking into consideration and being instructed by the Pope's views. There is a larger backdrop of Catholic morality, doctrine, and philosophy that informs all individual positions and maintaining with in these bounds is what is truly key. That is why you can see a diversity of opinion on the issue of the war in Lebanon from important people in the Church. However, everything is maintained in the appropriate bounds of the Catholic Faith.

That said, I invite you to read this article which cuts through everything that has come out from the Vatican and individuals.

The situation is EXTREAMLY complex so don't expect to find the Vatican saying something that is decicively for one side or the other.
