why? simply because they don't know the joy of it.
maybe some people try to learn playing basketball, but somehow it ended up with uninterested attitude or some sort.
when every person learn something for the first time it means that they can't do it, some people can handle the pressure of the inability to do something but there are some who can't. this frustrated feeling leads to stop playing 'this' sport.
some people also worry about Injuries. and some people just can't find a ring on their neighbourhood?!? they find a tennis court instead for example.
all these factors will make the person feel that 'this' sport is not so fun. and then they don't play basketball.
I think this goes to almost all sports.

forget them basketball is played all over the world football and baseball are only played in some countries

NO!! its lots greater desirable to play cuz them you already know issues. observing it you spot each little thing that could ensue yet once you're in the pastime you dont care what people think of you in basic terms care approximately what you're doing and how your team is going to win the pastime.

and it can be a very physical sport just go to youtube.com and type basketball fights and wowowowow
