In this Disney classic, when the Big Bad Wolf is climbing down the chimney, the third little pig uncovers a pot of boiling water, and then adds turpentine to it. I imagine during the time when this animated short was made, the advantages of adding turpentine to further the agony of the wolf were probably obvious to the viewing audience. But today...when my daughter asks "why...?" (which occurs frequently), I have no idea (which also occurs frequently, much to my dismay).

It stings. Actually, it's worse than that. It can burn the skin and eyes, damage the lungs and central nervous system if inhaled, and cause renal failure if ingested. Some of those older fairy tales and kids' stories could be kinda gritty, huh? Like in the very first curious George Book, the monkey smokes a pipe! Bet they didn't show THAT in the animated movie that just came out!
