So, it originates from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The main question being – what is the ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything? Which he says is 42. Is this a riddle, or a satire, or a joke? Is there some definable reality behind this '42'. I do not know what your opinion is but I have my own explanation for 42. And it is as follows.
You see the universe is an animated entity in which everything, from a tiny electron to gigantic galaxies, is in perpetual motion. What we see is, in fact, the effect of this motion. It is like existence constantly existing over and over again in infinitely small intervals of time or motion, so small that it is beyond our observation to capture any instance of none-existence in between intervals of existence – it is as if a heart is beating in the entire universe.
Now, imagine a celluloid film - a film tape consisting of huge number of individual frames with a still photograph on each of them, making up a complete motion picture. In this every next frame carries the action a little forward. And when film tape is played in a projector it looks flawlessly smooth and alive. This is exactly what our universe is like - a very real film that we ourselves make part of. There is life, and then there is death, there is matter, and then there is antimatter, there is existence, and the there is non-existence, there is opposite to everything. Now, the thing that I am going to tell you is the fact behind encrypted answer, that is 42, by Douglas Adam. He perhaps wanted us to think and find – he would not have just picked any number out of many to make up the most important argument of his book , would he? No, of course not. There is a reason for 42, and there are certain meanings attached to it. Here is what I think: the film tape, I mentioned earlier, when runs through a projector, it runs at a speed with about 42 frame passing in front of our eyes per second. Any slower than this the effect to animation would not be produced upon the retina of our eyes. This is the riddle that was hard to understand for earlier cinema goers, as it is for us today to understand that nature of space and time – apart from students of of Relativity Theory.

The what is six times nine is the question is the joke. The point is how can there be a simple answer, or even a simple question to all existence? Ludicrous! Thus 42. Makes you think. And that too is the point. It makes you laugh. And that too is the point. I could go on listing these points for a while, but we all no, when I was done, there'd be 42 of 'em!

Didn't you listen to the mice? 42 is the answer to the ultimate question. And when they got back to Earth, Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent found out the ultimate question is "What is 6 times 7?"

If memory serves me right, the question is revealed in the final Hitch Hiker book as being "What is 8x7 ?" - the point being there's something fundamentally flawed in the design of the universe.
