hurts about as much as biting your tongue but the built up worry is going to be much worse, when it's done you'll think to yourself-thats all it was? It will swell for 3-7 days (possibly longer if you play with it or dont take good care of it) and be sore, you can still eat but bread especially is going to be tough-it'll stick to the bar. You may get a dent in the top of your tongue under the bar, it's perfectly fine just the pressure from the ball and it'll go away after awhile. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day and use non-alcoholic mouth wash (if you must use listerine dilute it w/ water 1/2 and 1/2) as this can damage the healing tissue and kill the GOOD bacteria in your mouth. Also after eating, drinking other than water, smoking, etc rinse your mouth with a salt solution such as 1/2tsp to a 16oz bottle of water (easy to keep w/ you). Also avoid exchange of bodily fluids-open mouth kissing, oral sex (this can also tear the healing fistula) you dont want someone else's germs in your wounds.

Okay I got mine done about four weeks ago and i was nervous of the pain. That was like a big concern of mine. I got it done and everyone before me told me it wouldn't hurt and so at the moment it didn't like. In retrospect it was kinda pinchy but its not bad, like when i knock my elbow its worse. I got my navel done last year and i think the tongue hurts slightly more but not much.
The days after can be painful, like sting or ache but its not all that bad. You can talk alright, just eat only ice cream for like a day or two. After a week it like doesn't hurt. If you get it done don't drink straight alcohol for a week maybe two, don't have lemon or salad dressing. Use an antibacterial mouthwash heaps, or warm salt water is great too. Its not that bad, really.
I love mine, and I would get it done again, never regret and the pain was not bad and i have a low threshold. Serious, people will tell you not to, don't listen to them. Its great. And it doesn't hurt bad.

Hi, i havent personally got it done but my fiancee has and i went with him to get it done and he said it hurt, but it was pretty quick so it only hurt for a few moments, and of course it hurt afterwards as its like biting your tongue but much worse as your tongue will swell up twice as big, at first they put a big bar in so it allows your tongue too swell, it may be uncomfortable and you may belch,or feel like your choking but once you get use to it and the swelling goes dowe you can put a smaller bar in. You have to remember to rinse it often, the best thing to use is Listerene as it numbs the pain a little. But other than that everything was ok for him. He just hated living on custurd and soup for a while and also hes got his fork stuck on it a couple of times and swollowed a few balls off the bars a few times. It does heal eventually just keep rinsing. Also try not to knock it against your teeth at the bottom as it will damage the enamel and try not to bite on it. Also make sure the piercer checked that he can do the piercing first he should cheack for any veins underneath your tongue. Because if you have a vein running through you could bleed to death if he pierces threw it.

your navel hurts worse. i got my tounge done a week & 1/2 ago & i can honestly say that it didnt hurt me i jumped when i heard it go through but that was it, it was swollen for 3 days & it hurt the first time i tried to eat but you arent susposed to eat for 3 days except for milkshakes, pudding, yogurt & things like that. also do not drink beer because it has yeast in it & the person who pierces you will confirm that you can get a yeast infection if you consume yeast, also stay away from soups for at least a week because salt will make it hurt. for the first week use a cheap mouthwash after eating, drinking, or smoking.(not listerine, they say its stronger & the alcohol in it is bad for your piercing) also you will talk a little funny for about 4 days, i had a lisp & couldnt pronounce the letter S or TH words for awhile, you'll need to keep talking to a minimum or it does begin to hurt because your tounge swells

They numb your tongue, all you hear is a small pop when the needle comes out the other side. Then you get a tiny amount of bleeding, the most uncomfortable bit is the swelling. It's hard to eat of drink for a day. The swelling goes down about 2 days after. Nothing to worry about at all

Well, I just had my lip done [saturday] and I screamed, so tongue is gonna be worse. I've had tattoos, navel peircing and a slipped disk, and I have to say, lip was worse. If the lip was that bad, I don't wanna consider what tongue is gonna be like.
The infection risk is actually lower than for most parts of the body though, since your mouth maintains its own germ-free balence and saliva is naturally slightly antiseptic.
If you get it done, get used to eating a lot of soup, through a straw.

it will hurt like crap. you could end up with a swollen infected tounge, you may well die from the tounge blocking of your airway, if you survive then your teeth will be knackered and there is always the risk of it becoming infected, the mouth is the dirtiest place in your body,DON,T DO IT
